Winter Reflection Retreat

DECEMBER 1 & 2, 2018
10 am to 3 pm

Story house, whidbey institute, 6449 old pietila Road, clinton, WA 98236

Imagine two days dedicated to slowing down to the pace of Nature during a time when many aspects of our culture are amping up for the holidays. Take time with Charlene Ray to reflect and begin to step into the “dreaming time” of winter. We will enjoy walks in the woods and become more curious about and notice the ways Nature is resting and how the growth is moving to the internal underground places for the stillness of the Winter months. We will explore how what we are observing in nature mirrors what is happening within us as we prepare for the Winter months ahead. We will use journal reflection, art, walking, mindfulness, guided imagery, solo time and silence as we bring our energy to what we want to seed in the Winter for growth in the Spring. This retreat includes a soup and salad lunch and a healing herbal tea on both days.

"He who marvels at the beauty of the world in summer will find equal cause for wonder and admiration in winter.”

John Burroughs, American Naturalist

I love to teach with the seasons. I am a believer that if we lived in accordance with the seasons, we would all be happier and healthier. It is the way farmers live and those whose vocation has brought them close to the soil and into the world of Nature. But it is a good practice for all of us. You probably feel more like spending time indoors, quietly reading, crafting, watching movies in the darker months of Winter. Most people feel a rise in energy and vitality as daylight increases, and we see the first buds of Spring. This is no surprise because we are not separate from Nature.

As Fall moves toward Winter and the holiday energy is a buzz, I would like to invite you to sink into a time of deep reflection and move into the darker season in a more conscious and aware way.

Prepare for your journey

As we move into Winter, you are invited to pause for two days to reflect on the abundance of Summer, the letting go that Autumn brings, and then step into the stillness of Winter. Because this is a reflection retreat, there will be many opportunities for personal process and some sharing with the small group.

I invite you to clear your schedule for the two days so that you can be present to yourself, to Nature and have the time and space for the magic of the retreat. For each day, please wear comfortable layers, bring comfortable socks or slippers for indoors, a comfy blanket, walking shoes for time on the trail, rain gear, gloves and hat. It is important to have a journal, water bottle and an object that represents you for the collective altar. You may wish to bring personal art supplies, magazines for collage and other art materials. I will have many supplies available for the group to use.
